Waterfall methodology is a project management process that has been in use for decades. It is used in many different industries and is the most popular project management method in the software industry. Waterfall methodology relies on a sequential approach to managing projects which starts with the initiation of a project, continues with planning, design and development, followed by testing and finally deployment. Waterfall methodology was created by W. Edwards Deming and Joseph M. Juran to manage projects that have uncertain outcomes or have high risks of failure.
