A CMM is a tool that helps companies to understand their current capabilities and the future ones. It is a framework that can be used to plan and forecast future needs of the company. The CMM was first developed by the Capability Maturity Modeling International (CMMI) in 1989. The CMM was originally developed as an alternative to existing models of organization development, such as the Six Sigma process, Six Sigma quality improvement methodologies and Six Sigma process improvement methodologies. In 1990, Capability Maturity Modeling International (CMMI) published a book on CMM called "Capability Maturity Modeling".
